Updates and privacy
Update bar and news bar
When 3MF Translator starts, it asks our server whether there is a newer version, or a message from us such as news of a sale.
- A newer version shows a bar at the top: 3MF Translator 1.0.1 is available., with Download and Release notes.
- A message shows in a second bar, with a button to read more.
× hides a bar until the next time you start the app. Nothing is saved, so a bar comes back at the next start while the server still sends it.
Help → Check for Updates… asks at any time and tells you either that a new version is out, You’re up to date., or Couldn’t check for updates. Check your internet connection and try again.
If the check fails at start-up (no internet, say), nothing appears and the app works as usual.
What is sent
The request contains the app’s version and your operating system, and nothing else: no information about you, your computer or your files. Like any internet request, it reveals your IP address to the server.
The server is hosted by Microsoft Azure, which records the time of each request, the version, the operating system, and an approximate location worked out from the IP address, not the address itself. Those records are kept for 90 days. We use them only to run the service and to count how often each version is used, and we don’t sell or share them.
Apart from this check, 3MF Translator sends nothing to us or anyone else. The projects and files you open and translate stay on your computer.
Section 8 of the license agreement, Update Check and Privacy, says the same.
Turning it off
In Preferences, untick Check for Updates at Launch, Check for News at Launch, or both. With both off, the app sends nothing when it starts. Help → Check for Updates… still works when you choose it.
