Set up your printers
You tell 3MF Translator about your printers once. Each printer you translate for is a target: a name, the slicer you use for it, the printer preset in that slicer, the nozzle, and how many filaments it can load. Targets are kept in groups, the tabs in the main window.
The first time
When no targets are saved yet, 3MF Translator opens with Welcome to 3MF Translator. Click New target… for each printer you own, then Done. You can open this window again any time with Help → Set Up Targets….
Make a target
New target has:
- The slicer you open this printer’s projects in.
- The printer: the printer presets installed in that slicer. Type to filter the list. It shows only what that slicer has installed, so install the printer in the slicer first if it isn’t there.
- Nozzle: filters the printer list by nozzle size.
- Printer Slots: the total number of filaments the printer can load at once: AMS, CFS, MMU, Box Turtle and/or total toolheads. It starts at what the printer preset says: 4 for a printer with an AMS or another automatic filament changer, one per toolhead on a tool changer such as the Snapmaker U1 or the Prusa XL, otherwise 1. Change it to match your setup, for example 8 with two AMS units. For PrusaSlicer, QIDISlicer, SuperSlicer and UltiMaker Cura it is the printer’s number of extruders and can’t be changed. See Filaments and printer slots.
- Name: follows the printer’s name until you type your own. Names must be unique.
Click Save. A new target starts on the slicer and nozzle of the last one you made.
Groups
Groups are the tabs above your targets: one for the shop and one for the print farm, say. A fresh install has one, My Printers.
- + at the right of the tabs adds a group.
- Right-click a tab (or double-click it) to rename it; right-click → Delete… removes the group. Its targets stay saved.
- Drag tabs to reorder them. ▾ lists every group when there are more than fit.
Translate makes a project for every target in the open group.
Each group also has two options:
- Center model(s) on the target plate (on by default): keeps the models centered on the target printer’s bed when it is a different size from the source’s.
- Open the output folder after translation (off by default): shows the new files in your file manager.
The target rows
+ Add target lists your saved targets that this group doesn’t have yet, then New target… and Manage targets…. The same target can be in several groups.
Each row has, from left to right:
| Enabled | Off: the target is skipped and stays in the list. |
| Plates | Which of the project’s plates this target gets. See Plates. |
| Filaments | How the project’s filaments land in the printer’s slots. See Filaments. |
| Rotate 90° | Turns every plate a quarter turn clockwise for this target. |
| Open After | Opens the finished project in this target’s slicer. See Opening in your slicer. |
| ✎ | Edits the target (a double-click on the row does too). |
| × | Removes the target from this group. It stays saved. |
To delete a target for good, edit it and click Delete, or use File → Manage Targets…, which lists every saved target.
A row turns amber when there’s something to know before translating: a plate that won’t fit that printer, or filaments without a slot. Those warnings never stop a translation.
A row whose printer preset or slicer can’t be found says so, for example Bambu Lab A1 0.4 nozzle is not installed in Bambu Studio: edit the target, and stops Translate while the row is on. Install the printer in the slicer, pick another printer, or turn the row off.
